What exactly is copywriting?

At first you might think it has something to do with trademarks but that is what is called a copyright. Different spelling and meaning.

What is the dictionary definition of copywriting?

Copywriting is the act or occupation of writing text for the purpose of advertising or other forms of marketing. The product, called copy, is written content that aims to increase brand awareness and ultimately persuade a person or group to take a particular action.

It is the ability to use the written words to persuade someone to take an action.

It could be in the form of a sales letter so that a person buys your product.  It could be writing copy so that a person will click a button to take an action which is usually a Buy Now instruction.

Copywriters write the copy so that it persuades, influences and engages the reader to take an action.

If you can become a skilled copywriter, you’ll never need to worry about money again. You will have the power to generate income on demand or to launch or grow any business that you desire.

Copywriters account for some of the highest paid people in the world.

So, copywriting has a lot to do with selling and closing. It has very little to do with writing, so you don’t need to worry about being an English major to be successful.

Most people don't even think of this profession and yet it is all around us.

The flyer you received, the brand recognition, the Amazon product you bought were more than likely produced by a copywriter.

Copy is needed everywhere, and copywriters produce the copy. It is a multi billion-dollar industry, and yet not many people know that this profession exists.

People go to school to learn to be an accountant, or a lawyer, or a doctor or maybe an engineer. No one even thinks about becoming a copywriter.

Let’s look at an example of what you, as a copywriter, would look at:

Let's say that there's a company that sells headphones online.

They have a page that shows these headphones (this page is called a landing page) and on this page they talk about the features of the headphones. For every 100 people that see this page two people buy. We call this a page with a 2% conversion factor.

Let’s say that currently with this page they make $250,000 per year in sales.

You, the copywriter, would look at this landing page and see that the benefits of the product rather than the features would give their customer more of a reason to purchase.

You may change the headline or tweak to the description.

Example from JBL “Headphones – Experience uncompromising JBL sound wherever you are through wired and wireless technology – whether you’re traveling, at the gym, or on the go.”

Example from Bose “Renowned performance and superior comfort from headphones designed to bring you closer to your music — and the world around you.”

Benefit on page about In Ear Headphones:

Hear the truth from your favorite artists with high-performance drivers that generate outstanding frequency response and pure bass that is deep, powerful and accurate.” 

There may be other tweaks that you would make like changing the offer, the guarantee, or the call to action.

Let’s now assume that the tweaks you made have resulted in 4 out of 100 visitors buying these headphones.

You’ve just doubled the revenue.

It went from $250,000 to $500,000 without adding any extra marketing expense.

Not only have you increased the revenue, but you did it without the company needing to get more customers or adding more expense to the manufacturing expense of the product.

All you did was change a few words on how the offer or the message was being communicated to the marketplace.

You wield a lot of power doing this, wouldn’t you say.

The next question you might have is “How do I become a copywriter?”

You want to become a copywriter because you can imagine how much income you could generate as a copywriter if you're good.

You like the ability to work from home or work when you want and with whom you want from anywhere that you want.

You now also understand that a copywriter doesn't require a degree in English nor need to have a lot of capital to start off with.
